Viciebsk* region. Viciebsk region is situated in the north of Belarus in the middle reaches of the Zachodniaja Dzvina and in the head of the Dniapro. In was formed on the January 15, 1938.

Covers the area of 40 thousand square kilometres. Population numbers 1 307,4 thousand inhabitants.

The region is the second largest in Belarus by the density of the railroad system. Many highways, such as Moscow- Orsa -Minsk-Warsaw, St. Petersburg -Viciebsk- Orsa -Kiev, Smolensk -Viciebsk-Polack -Riga run through the region. It is an industrial region. All plain-woven fabrics, polyethylene, half of the country's petroleum products and electricity are produced here. Recently Viciebsk Free Economic. Area was created here.

The region is included in the European region Lake District. Viciebsk region is a unique area for its broadest rivers network and the large number of lakes. The deepest in Belarus lake Doúhaje (53,7 m) is situated in Hlybokaje district. The main water arteries are the Zachodniaja Dzvina with the side streams and the Dniapro. More than 2,8 thousand lakes are located in the territory of Viciebsk region. Among the largest are Asviejskaje, Lukomskaje, Drysviaty, Dryviaty, Niescarda, Absterna. The Braslaúskija Aziory National Park and significant part of the Biarezinski biosphere reserve are located in the region. Here were created 26 of wildlife sanctuaries and more than 80 of nature objects are preserved. Climate is moderate continental.

Culture life of the region is very reach. There are two theatres, Philharmonic Hall, Concert Hall. Different festivals are held in the region. The most famous is Slavonic Bazaar in Viciebsk.
